Short Break - 15 minutes

Activity three:
Group Write:

30 minutes
Elaborative thinking
Start with an idea, and continue to expand on the idea until you have
exhausted it

Activity:

Each person begins a narrative and writes for five minutes. Choose a
topic apropos of one of your classroom units. then pass the narrative
along to the person on your (right). that person reads and thinks
about what you have written. then he/she adds more information or an
impression or series of questions still to be answered by your
statement.

continue this process until everyone has written something and the
paper gets back to the originator, who completes the narrative and
hopefully ties in all the loose ends.

That may or may not be the end of the subject, but at least it will
have generated ideas and impressions.

Example:
First person writes a description of an apple ( outward appearance).
The next person writes about the production of apples as a business.
The next person talks about the farms in the area which produce apples.
The fourth person might talk about the kinds of apples there are. the
next person talks about what you can make with apples etc., etc., etc.
there is room for personal opinion, stories about apples, ad infinitem.

20 minutes
Sharing:
How did it feel to have to add to someone else’s ideas? How did you
reach into yourself to come up with what you chose?

Homework:
Research Creative Thinking Exercises, particularly Fluency, Flexibility
and Elaborative Thinking. (The web resources will be helpful here, as
well as some of the GT resources. Although many activities are often
geared to a lower level, the process or template is usable and
adaptable for your purposes.)

Use them as is or adapt them as you think about ways you can
incorporate them in your lesson planning and activities within units.
Possible use: think about how you might use them in the pre-test
phase of a unit, for instance.

Be prepared to share 2 of each of the Creative Thinking Activities
choices you will use next year.

You may have some you already use which you would be willing to share
as well.
